Working Hard in Birmingham

Dear mom papa, family, and friends,
ELNA IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! Oh man. Thanks for the pictures! I was bummed last week when I didn't get any. So thanks! And I can't wait for hard copies to hang up in my flat and show everyone!

And I can't believe that Sally had a baby boy! I didn't even know she was pregnant. But how exciting! A boy! And another David! Fantastic. And I am glad all went well with the birth. I’m excited for them! Can’t wait to meet him too. Man. they have lots of kids! And I can't believe she went to Nancy’s graduation in labor! I can't believe Nancy is graduated! What is she doing next year? BYU? They are growing up!

So I gave a talk yesterday on missionary work. And I had my whole talk written out, as usual, and I never, not once, looked at it. First time EVER! And I wasn't nervous at all for it. Wow. The mission has changed how I give talks. It was awesome. I started out with "about 43 years ago (I think) my dad saw missionaries on the streets of Berkeley California. He felt prompted to go and talk to them. He was baptized soon after, and also baptized his only sister/sibling. He went on a mission. He met my mom at BYU, and they had six kids, all of whom went on missions. And his Sister married his mission companion and they had five kids, all of whom served missions. I wonder if those two missionaries on the streets of Berkeley realize the impact they had on my family and all those that we have served." and then I went on to talk about how we can all be missionaries. We can all bring those that don't know the truth, into the gospel. And we can change lives. I only had about 7 minutes, because time was short, and it went by like that. So fast. Anyways, I am so proud of myself that I’ve started being able to talk in front of people. Skill I’ll need in life I think.

So things are going well around here. Life is good. And we've had a good week. Tons of work. It’s been great.

We saw Peter. And he read his Book of Mormon almost every day this week! And it's unbelievable the difference it makes in lessons. He asks more and better questions. He feels the spirit more. He is more willing to commit to our commitments. He is happier. He is just different. Even if he didn't tell us he'd read, we would have known. Complete difference. It’s exciting! All the nagging is worth it when they do it! Ha-ha.

Mah is doing great GREAT great! He’s waiting for the government to let him know if he can stay in the country or if he has to leave. I don't really know. We are just praying a ton for him. I can't believe they would let him go back when it's so dangerous for him. So prayers in Mah's behalf please?

About the driving. We alternate days. It’s nice. That’s been what I’ve done with every companion that had a license. I don't like driving every day. So the driver drives, and the other one makes phone calls, and confirms appointments, and sets up our days. It’s good.

Our ward is having their "summer fair" this Saturday. So we as missionaries have a booth to set up. And everyone is meant to be inviting people to come to the fair. So hopefully people will take copies of the book of Mormon and stuff. But we want the booth to be very attractive, so people will want to come over and see. So we got this awesome idea. Kinda from mormon.org. But what we did, was we passed around small pieces of paper to everyone at church during the RS/PH/primary/YM/YW classes, and we had them all write their testimonies, little or big, and give them back to us. So they did it, and we collected tons of papers, and we are pinning them up, so people will want to go up and read what's on the boards. I think it will be really cute. I’ll let you know how it will go. The elders are supposed to be thinking of ideas as well, but we are just going ahead, in case they don't have anything. We’ll see tonight. We have a meeting about it. The ward's getting really into it. It’s awesome! I love this ward, and they are really opening up and becoming much more of a family. It’s great!

Marcela is doing alright. She isn't taking all of our commitments, and so we are really trying to figure out what to do with her. But she's alright. She’s just so stressed out with life. But we love her. And she knows it's all true. She recognizes the spirit. And that's nice. So we have a ways to go with her. She’s great though. Just needs love and work. That’s what everyone needs.

Things here are going really great. We are having a ton of fun. And the work is going great. We are trying our best to keep on top of it all. I’m excited. This week I’m going on an exchange to banbury! And so I hope to see a few of my old friends. I’m pretty excited. It’ll be good, and I have never worked with Sister Whitaker before, so I’m excited to learn all I can from her. It’ll be exciting! That’s this Wednesday. I’m sad; I’m missing a lesson with Mah and Peter! But life will go on. I just really look forward to some lessons during the week. Good thing we teach Mah three times a week. Ha-ha. Just to make sure he understands everything.

Oh and cool story of following the spirit this week! We were driving to our next appointment, and Sister Baker randomly said "go talk to him." so we pulled over, I jump out of the car, and he's right there. And this is how our conversation goes:

me: Hey! Can I ask you a question?
Alex: uh, sure.
Me: well, actually it's not really a question. But can I share this card with you? (I give him a mormon.org card) do you believe in Jesus Christ?
Alex: I’m not really sure actually
me: do you want to find out?
Alex: yeah I do
me: can we see you again to help you find out
Alex: yeah, tomorrow morning, 10:00?
Me: yeah, where do you live?
Alex: gives me his address

So that was about a thirty second conversation. Hilarious. He ended up being on call that morning, and had to go into work. But we'll stop by again. He seems pretty cool! We are excited about these cool experiences!

So yeah! Life is GREAT. And I love LOVE love being here. It rains too much, but it makes everything really green and lovely. And the people here are great. Hopefully it won't rain on Saturday for the fair! There is going to be a bouncy castle! Ha-ha.

Love you! Sooooo MUCH!

Love, Annie
